Now if you’ve taken it and you’re an Intuitive Eater, then keep reading!

As an intuitive eater, you trust your body to make choices around food that feels good for your body. You make food choices based on satisfaction, hunger, and fullness, and you do so unapologetically. Today, we’re going to discuss these details in more depth and then discuss next steps to continue moving forward with your balanced eating habits.

The 4 characteristics of an Intuitive Eater:

  1. You give yourself unconditional permission to eat

Intuitive eaters give themselves unconditional permission to eat. You have no rules when it comes to food. You have no off limit foods, and you allow yourself to eat all food groups. All foods can fit, and you can have as much as you want. As you can tell, this differs from the many diets out there that puts foods and food groups in a box. Diets define the foods that we can eat, the amount that we can eat, and the timing of our meals.

  1. You eat for physical instead of emotional reasons, majority of the time

You typically eat for physical reasons instead of emotional ones. Physical reasons implies physical hunger. This isn’t to say that you never have or will emotionally eat, it implies that you eat for physical reasons more so than emotional ones. In conjunction with characteristic #1 above, you eat any and all foods for those physical reasons.

  1. You’re in tune with you hunger and fullness cues

You know when you’re hungry, and you know when you’re full. You tell yourself these internal cues, and start/ stop eating in response to these signals. You’re able to trust your body to tell you when and how much to eat, and you don’t need to second guess yourself. Being in tune with your internal cues comes naturally and you don’t need to rely on dieting apps to log your food or calories.

  1. You have body and food choice congruence

You prioritize your health (hello, that’s why you’re here!), and therefore make your food choices based on that, in addition to what your taste buds want. It’s about balance. The food choices that you make feel good. You’re in control of your eating, and you’re confident in that. There’s no eating of food that makes you feel like crap, and your binging and overeating days are gone.

So there you have it, the four characteristics of an Intuitive Eater!

Now, are you curious to how you can continue to support yourself in creating and maintaining balanced eating habits?

We’ll walk you through a mindfulness exercise that our students in our Your Nourished Route self-paced program learn to build consistent eating habits that are stress-free.

One of the skills that you can (and should,) learn to incorporate into your everyday routine is to be more mindful about your eating habits and check in with yourself more frequently. This can help you to make more intentional choices when it comes to your eating habits and find more balance in your food choices.

When it comes time to eat, or if you’re thinking about food, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How am I currently feeling – am I hungry? Am I full?
  • Why do I want to eat now? Is it for emotional reasons? Am I stressed?
  • Are there distractions around me?
  • Am I in the mindset of putting a food into “good” vs “bad” categories

In doing so, you’re more likely to continue on your journey as an Intuitive Eater and create eating behaviors that are effective, easy, and joyful.

And the last question that you can always ask yourself is “What can I add to this meal or snack to make it more nourishing?”

This is a simple tactic that can be a game changer when it comes to your eating habits and reaching (and sustaining) your nutrition goals! When we’re so committed to our health and nutrition, we often focus on what we can eliminate or restrict. Instead, if we change our mindset to what we can ADD to a meal, we can find food more enjoyable. This will make your life (and cooking,) easier, more efficient, and less overwhelming.

So – what’s the final thing that you need to create and maintain balanced eating habits.
