As an Expert Dieter, you’re no amateur when it comes to dieting, sticking to a diet, or trying a new one. You’re used to being on a diet, and you don’t know what it’s like to not be on one. You’ve tried almost every diet out there, and when you’re not on a diet, you’re looking for a new one to start. Today, we’ll discuss the characteristics that make you a true Expert Dieter. Of note, not all of these may apply to you, so reflect on which one resonates the most. Then, we’ll explore the next steps to take to break free of the diet cycle, live a more balanced life, and find simplicity when it comes to your eating habits.

The 4 characteristics of an Expert Dieter:

  1. You’ve restricted certain foods or food groups

Dieting and diet culture has taught you that certain foods are off limits. You often place foods into “good” vs “bad” categories and tell yourself that you can’t buy your favorite foods, or even have them in the house. You miss those foods and sometimes, you can’t get those foods out of your head.

  1. You’re super familiar with MyFitnessPal or other tracking apps

Tracking food has become an obsession for you. It gives you a sense of accountability, and makes you feel accomplished when you hit your targets. The thought of deleting MyFitnessPal gives you anxiety and while you don’t want to do it, you rely on it so much. You wouldn’t know how to eat or how to know if you’re eating enough or too much if you deleted it. You feel tired from using the app, and you find it to be tedious.

  1. You’ve tried multiple diets

You’re always planning your next diet, or are eager to jump on the bandwagon when a friend or coworker mentions one that is working well for them. You’ve tried almost every diet or nutrition trend out there, but nothing has worked. The reason that you’re always on a diet is because the previous one hasn’t worked.

  1. You’re obsessed with food

You’re painfully aware of the diet-binge cycle which includes: diet, lose weight, binge, gain weight back, start a new diet, cycle. You miss your favorite foods and all of the other foods that you’ve given up. Not allowing them into your routine makes you think about them even more and occasionally when they’re in front of you or you’ve had a bad day, you’ll binge. You feel out of control around certain foods. You can’t stop thinking about food or dieting.

So there you have it, the four characteristics of an Expert Dieter!

Now, are you curious to how you can continue to support yourself in creating and maintaining balanced eating habits?

We’ll walk you through a mindfulness exercise that our students in our Your Nourished Route self-paced program learn to build consistent eating habits that are stress-free.

One of the skills that you can (and should,) learn to incorporate into your everyday routine is to be more mindful about your eating habits and check in with yourself more frequently. This can help you to make more intentional choices when it comes to your eating habits and find more balance in your food choices.

When it comes time to eat, or if you’re thinking about food, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How am I currently feeling – am I hungry? Am I full?
  • Why do I want to eat now? Is it for emotional reasons? Am I stressed?
  • Are there distractions around me?
  • Am I in the mindset of putting a food into “good” vs “bad” categories

In doing so, you’re more likely to continue on your health journey, change your mindset away from dieting, and create eating behaviors that are effective, easy, and joyful.

And the last question that you can always ask yourself is “What can I add to this meal or snack to make it more nourishing?”

This is a simple tactic that can be a game changer when it comes to your eating habits and reaching (and sustaining) your nutrition goals! When we’re so committed to our health and nutrition, we often focus on what we can eliminate or restrict. Instead, if we change our mindset to what we can ADD to a meal, we can find food more enjoyable. This will make your life (and cooking,) easier, more efficient, and less overwhelming.

So – what’s the final thing that you need to create and maintain balanced eating habits.
